Ever wondered who the Sports Gambling God O' Nightly was? (hint, it's me!) Well, now we can find out! I'm just brainstorming here, but here's one way it could work:

1) People sign up before the first full weekend of college/Pro football (whichever one comes first)

2) Everyone who signs up gets $10,000 in Nightly Funbucks.

3) You bet on college and pro football games each week (and the NBA and College basketball if you're into those when they come along. Pretty much anything that has a sports line) using the Vegas line. These are just for fun bets, of course. If your sports line is challenged, you must provide a link to where you found it. But overall I think it's best if we don't have a bunch of links from here to real betting line websites so the honor system is best. LMFAO

4) If you edit your post after the start of any game in your post, you lose all those games automagicly.

5) You have to make at least one bet per week, but there's no maximum number of bets and no minimum Funbucks amount. If you're gutless and want to bet $5 a week, that's all you.

6) If you lose all your money, you're out of the game.

7) Usually, we're betting against the house but if two players want to bet each other that's cool too. Since we're competing against each other, this is a way to hurt your competition as you accumulate Funbucks.

8) Each new reply should contain your updated Funbucks amount, even if you haven't made a bet in a couple days. This will help us keep track as we go along. Another way to do it would be to always have our current Funbucks total in our signatures.

9) Whoever has the most money the morning after the Super Bowl is the 2009 Sports Gambling God O' Nightly. This is assuming that all but one person hasn't already lost all their money.

What do you think, sirs?

Here is a suggestion, why dont we just choose one site that gives odds on everything and everynoe has to use the spreads or odds listed on that site. Also I think allowing betting on basketball and all of that is a mistake, just be too much betting and too much room for people fudging numbers or just making honest mistakes.

Here is my idea, bets only on NFL and NCAA football. Every participant must bet on at least 3 college and 3 NFL games every week, but can bet on as many as he or she wants. Every game must have a minimum 100 dollar bet, no maximum bet. We choose one site that gives spreads and someone from nightly posts the spreads in the thread every wednesday night. If someone doesn't post their bets on a given week it gets treated as if they lost all 6 games with minimum bets. SO theyd lose 600 bucks.

I do like that what you put out there has more freedom, I just think a more organized and narrow approach would be easier to manage and would have less problems and arguments as far as how much each person has won/lost.

These are all good ideas, especially the minimum dollar amounts and the single website odds. The thing about odds is they can change so much in a week and vary by a couple points from site to site, so I like your idea of just having one site.

In fact, the only thing I don't like is the six game minimum. There might be weeks where someone is really busy so we should allow for that and have a one game minimum per week. I think most weeks people will bet a lot more because if you only bet one game a week all the way through you're going to have no chance of winning the whole thing.

But other than that, I like your ideas.

I will, yes. With help from one other person in case I have a busy week of my own. Any volunteers?

I think this should be a test of ONLY our betting prowess. We all start with the exact same take, and what happens from there is based entirely on our choices. Nobody gets any kind of bump or help from outside forces, it's all about the gambling and nothing else, bay-bee.

However, maybe we should have some kind of end of year Overall Sports God O' Nightly determination that takes into account everything a person does in this forum. Certain amount of points for each and every fantasy finish, some points for placing high in this, maybe some points for number of interesting topics started, etc. Then whoever does the best overall is the 2009 Nightly Sports God.

I'll manage it. Should be easy enough.

First up is deciding what line website to use. What about USAToday? Little chance of spyware on that website and no annoying popup ads or loud assed sound ads there, unlike some other betting websites.

Here's the pro and college lines for this week: http://sportsdirect....today/odds.aspx

"5Dimes" seems to be the most interesting line, so let's use them from that page this week.

My cash for now: $10,000

My bets:

Steelers -7 for $500

Eagles straight up for $500

Jaguars +8 for $500

Bills +12 for $1,000

Notre Dame -4.5 for $500

Just so everyone understands how its benig listed: They are only giving the number next to the home team. If its just a number with no negative sign the home team is getting those points. If there is a negative sign, the home team is giving those points.

Yeah, I actually bet a lot with bookies in my ill spent youth and even I got confused so look carefully. I've clearly been out of the game too long.

I may not have realized at 1st glance what was going on. I just knew that in the NY Daily News today the Irish were favored by 4.5. I knew there was no way that there could be that big a swing in lines so realized something was wrong.

Here are my plays:

Starting point: 10,000

Cincinatti -3.5 for 500---I just think Denver is gonna be bad

Chicago +3.5 for 500--=I like the Bears this year and that extra 1/2 pt seals it. At +3 I may have stayed away

Indianapolis -8 for 500---I think the Colts will want to make a statement in the 1st game with the new HC

NCAA

Notre Dame -3 for 500--I think ND is gonna be real good and I dont think Michigan is so good.

Ohio State +7 for 500--OSU looked bad but were looking ahead, frosh QB in front of 100,000 rabid Buckeye fans equals at least a close game

Georgia -7 for 500--UGA will not want to start 0-2 and USC didnt look so good against NC State. UGA big.

No and no. If you want to blow your entire wad this first week, go for it!

By the way, Choccie, that Denver game greatly intrigues me as a gambler. True, Denver is going to be ****ing awful this year. But so are the Bungles. That game scares the HELL out of me.

Going big on the home teams, I see. I'm going to try to stay away from the Colts and Fighting Irish this year, so of course I bet on both games this first week and will probably get my fat ass handed to me.

The last year I gambled heavily on the Colts was 1989. I bet $1,000 on the Colts getting 5 points against the defending world champion 49ers. The game was close until Rice took a crossing route 60+ yards to blow the game open. Despite a late blocked punt for a TD, the 49ers won 30-24. I bet double or nothing the next week on the Colts on the road against the Rams getting 7 points. Jim Everett torched the Colts retarded "high risk, high reward" defense (which they finally scrapped after this game) and the Colts lost 31-17 and I was down $2,000. So I bet double or nothing AGAIN the next week at home against the Falcons giving up 3 points. Chris Chandler, the starting quarterback, went down in the game so I was making plans to run to Mexico when the Colts actually came back and won 13-9. Whew. At that point I decided I was done betting on the Colts. LMFAO

Thats why I have largely stayed away from betting on sports, which I've strongly considered. You've got no control over the outcome. I'd much rather throw money at poker (which I have... lots), something that is largely decided by skill, and when you need luck you can make your own.

Not necessarily big on the home teams (honestly I didn't even bother checking) just big on the teams I think will win and cover :)

LMFAO at "wad"

Speaking of DI's play this week, I think this could be a tortoise and hare situation where him being conservative keeps him ahead of us big spenders.

We are having an issue with the spreads here. Irish has Cincy +2.5, when Cincy is favored over Denver.

We've had a few spreads listed wrong here already. What should the protocol be in these cases? Just that the pick doesnt count?

I think we should give people a chance to fix it, and if not just throw it out. I'd be more harsh about it if I hadn't just ****ed up the same way. LMFAO

Yeah, get a chance to fix it but what Im saying is what if its just left wrong until kickoff.

Here is my suggestion, everyone just take it upon yourself when looking at the spreads for your own picks to just quikcly look over one or 2 others to verify they are right. It will only take a moment to do this. In addition to weeding out people getting spreads wrong it serves another purpose which is that lines change. If on Tuesday I take for example the Bears +3.5 and the lines moves so that on Thursday its +2.5. If someone on Tuesday had verified my picks and that teh line was +3.5 on Tuesday it could avoid some issues.

Good point and good idea. However, since people can bet on Tuesday with a bookie and that bet gets sealed in no matter how much a line changes later (which is how some people can "try to hit the middle" if they're hard core gamblers) then the same should be true here. So, as long as you don't edit your post, your line can stay locked in at what it was when you posted. Now you could ask "how can we be sure later what the line was on that day" but personally I believe in the honor system. We're playing for fun here, so if somebody's going to lie to cheat on a for fun message board game then they're a vile douchebag who has to look at his face in the mirror knowing I know he's a vile douchebag. So it's all good.

Oh I agree that the line is locked in when you bet it, thats my point. Im also fine with the honor system if everyone else is. Personally I think everyone should just keep track of their own "money" on the honor system rather than having to have one person run it.

I think I will join just so I can bet $1,000 against the Colts each and every week.
