Well I think Star Wars and Harry Potter are healthier an obsession (for me, at least) than this crap. I just don't care for how it demeans women and the fascination with Robert Pattison is baffling.

Seems like a nice enough guy, but he constantly looks like you just need to grab him, hose him down and wash him with a big soapy brush.

He's no Cedric Diggory and his nose is funny. Plus I heard he smells.

A friend of mine explained this pretty aptly. She said that there's one big difference between Harry Potter fans and Twilight fans. Potter fans have limits.

After work tonight, I'm pretty sure more young males are beginning to feel comfortable in their skin and coming out of the closet. Way too many young guys willingly going to see this thing.

Well, I just got back from the midnight showing and these are my thoughts:

Saw it. Loved it. Told my sister I would like Jacob Black giftwrapped and waiting under the tree Christmas morning.

Saw it. Had some good wines, and a friend to snark with.

I went in expecting a horrible, painful train wreck, and was pleasantly surprised... I thought it was better than the book. I don't say that for anything, but i really disliked the whinyness of the book, so... make of that what you will. The sober guys who saw it with us thought it was pretty terrible.

I could have taken less of Bella's screaming nightmares, and the terrible contacts and makeup on the vampires (it's like the costume people went to an anime con and hit the cosplay contacts table hard), and I could have taken much more Volturi. I mean, guys, you got good actors, use them. But the parts I hated in the book were fairly briefly dealt with, so I was happy there. Plus, I think this director got better performances out of the actors.

Also, frolicking sparkly vampires LMAO. That scene needed a unicorn, and some rainbows. And bubbles.

I have to say, I wasn't happy with how they ended the movie. That needed to be dealt with in a much more mushy, snuggly manner, not all SURPRISE CLIFFHANGER!!!!! like it was.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the books, but I am addicted to these movies. C/P from my livejournal as far as my initial reactions to New Moon go:

It's three in the morning, but LORD, this has to be said...

I want an entire movie devoted to Alice. I live for scenes with her in it, srsly. A whole movie. Hear that Twilight producers?

I would like to take a moment to thank Jacob's wardrobe coordinator. More sexy men should be shirtless in 99% of their scenes. We owe you a great deal of gratitude. Flowers, chocolate, hookers -- whatever.

Whoever does the sparkly skin effects: good job on consistency. Everyone loves shiny things.

"Never trust vampires. Trust me." <--- I'm stealing that line for a book and I will feel only marginally bad about it.

"I've already seen you open it. You love it!" <--- it has to be said. Alice is awesome. I'd have her babies if it were physically possible.

"Shut up." <--- FINALLY Bella. GOD.

I also enjoyed listening to the guys (the guys, who like many guys there, had been drug to the theater by their girlfriends. Which we all know is an elaborate ploy by the girlfriends to educate their beau's on how to be more like Edward Cullen) behind me fall into the timeless and unavoidable Edward vs. Jacob debate. "Why is she WITH him? Jacob is the ****!" By the end of the movie, they thought Bella was a bitch and Edward was a tool. I know because they have a whispering fail.

With a few strangely edited exceptions, the acting was pretty fantastic this time around. Bella's anguish was believable and pretty damn understandable. This girl should seriously beware of all promises of not leaving. It is apparently code for, "I'm going to break up with you tomorrow, sorry!"

God, I love the vampire/werewolf pissing contests. I pretty much love everything about these movies except for the love story. The love story I'm pretty indifferent on. I mostly think there is a very Mormon friendly solution to Bella's problems; namely polygamy.

I love how utterly ****ed up it gets at the end. Vampire culture preview, thank GOD. This vegetarian stuff was getting a little overwhelming.

I'm going to go "SQUEEEE!" myself to bed now. God, I'm probably going to see this again. I have a hold-out fail.

And a final note: I went from refusing to even look at these book covers and refusing to see the movies... to staying up for nearly 24 hours (4:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m.) to make sure I saw it OMG at midnight. That hold-out fail is no joke.
Aziraphale. The Enemy, of course.

Oh, check out the Book Club thread, people have been clamoring for an all-Alice story since Meyer developed the character. Also, the actress who plays her is great in the role.

 Actually, in Bella's case, that'd be called polyandry. And I think she should throw Mike Newton in there for good measure (he is kind of adorable in a desperate way). And Quill.

My mom's response was "that would solve Sookie's problem, too!"

I... won't spoil it for you. But the way this is handled later in the story made me angry. But you'd like this part in the book, Bella stays in the room and sees a LOT more of that.

I'm convinced anyone lacking a Y chromosome should read this series through at least once. Love it or hate it, it's a bonding experience.

Icy, I didn't realize you were going to see it! I saw it in Grand Rapids; we could've watched it together! FAIL.

Positivies
*Alice was WAY better in this one. She sucked badly in the first movie and I was really disappointed with her. She was a millions times better this time around.
*Jessica was beyond hilarious again. I loved the movies scene; I couldn't stop laughing the whole time.
*Jasper's one line was also hilarious.
*The Volturi were excellent. Great actors, great costumes, great set, great writing.
*Charlie. He's not onscreen much, but he's great whenever he is.
*Buff shirtless men.
*Taylor Lautner. I was very impressed by his acting. He made a great Jacob.
*Kristen Stewart. I was kind of on the fence about her after the first one, but she redeemed herself in my eyes with this one. Much better.

After seeing the movie, my negatives are more about the book than how the movie was made:
*WHY would Bella prefer Edward to Jacob. WHY?????
*Making Edward go away for the whole book/movie means we don't get to see much of the Cullen family onscreen, which sucks :(
*The sparkly vampire frolicking scene. If this was meant to be funny, then it's a positive. If it was supposed to be taken seriously, then EPIC FAIL.

i read all four and a half in 2 days. they're engaging enough, but you just finish and realise that actually they're really nothing special. considering they set feminism back to the 1800s and seem ever so slightly racist. not to mention they're propaganda for one of the most silly religions ever.

did someone here mention it's better than the book this time? not that that would take much, bella's pining for half a book was possibly the most annoying thing ever.

Umm, are you sure? I thought it was exactly like in the movie. They're walking out and pass all these people and Edward tries to hurry them along but is too late to keep her from hearing the screams.

k, you're right, I looked it up - there was more description of the visuals, the kinds of people and all. I think it was the little old woman who had a good idea of what was happening before everyone else, and the detailed description of Heidi, that made it bigger in my mind

I've got to say, putting a little kid in that scene in the movie was pretty horrible.

So was it pretty accurate to the book? Did they leave out a bunch like the Potter novels?

I haven't read New Moon in a year or so but I think it was pretty accurate; nothing jumped out at me as being wrong or different. There was one moment that I know was an added bit, but it was only about 30 seconds long and it didn't really detract. There were a few scenes when I recognized dialogue pulled right from the text of the book, which I always think is cool.

I really enjoyed it, they did a very good job of sticking to the storyline, I did notice one or two things that weren't in the book, but overall, New Moon was definately waaaaaay better than Twilight. loved it loved it loved it!

So this movie is meant to show yet another double standard in society right?

I mean we got all of these women over the age of hmmm 25 eye banging that Jacob character who is only 17, yet if guys do that to a sexy 17 year old woman, the guy is a perv. I'm about right with that?

As for the movie, I had to watch it for work, and I gotta say it was entertaining aside from now knowing what this Edward character is like and wondering why women want guys like him. He was sulky, weak looking, whiny, a coward, and pretty much a horrible love interest.
Guys want to do all women, we just control ourselves for the sake of society, common decency, personal respect, and our own survival.

You should admire us for the control we have, you have no idea what testosterone does to us.

I'm 27, and my thoughts toward Jacob are more "WOW give him five more years and I'll be SO there...."

He's hot, you'd be blind if you didn't look... but I'm very aware that he's 17 (and playing 16 in the movie), and can appreciate from a distance. As for the rest of them, I'm pretty sure that in RL they're all old enough to buy their own beer if they want.

And I agree about Edward... because I read Midnight Sun, and do know what he's like, and am too creeped out to see the appeal... even if he is admittedly charming when seen through Bella's eyes.

btw, I saw this again yesterday, and sober at that... it's not an Oscar contender, but it's still a fun movie, IMHO. The (female) friend I saw it with hated it with a burning passion.

It's not like he really looks 17, especially as buffed up as he is for this one. If I didn't know better, I'd guess him to be around 20. And I'm less than two years older than he is anyway, so I'll eye bang him if I want to, thank you very much!

Your post pretty much made me stop resisting the urge to post this:

I haven't seen the movie. I don't intend to. My 15 year old cousin said it was a waste of $9.50 and that she was ashamed to have been dragged there so I don't really feel like I'm missing anything.

Oh, just do it ;)

Continuing the I-have-a-holdout-fail saga... I just got done reading Twilight. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I will admit to skimming over some parts.

My biggest problem, I think, is the first-person perspective. Once you get past that, I guess, you can appreciate things on a larger scale.

It's not a horrible story. Just really, really wish it were in third-person.

I, however, renew my demands about having a whole book/movie about Alice.

Quick edit: Surprisingly, I found that Twilight the Movie stayed shockingly faithful to the book. I'll have to see about New Moon, but color me surprised.
Aziraphale. The Enemy, of course.
But an enemy for six thousand years now, which made him sort of a friend.

It's not like he really looks 17, especially as buffed up as he is for this one. If I didn't know better, I'd guess him to be around 20.

Just checking to see what this sounded like if the genders were reversed. haha

The only reason I clicked on this thread again is that I saw Sonny was the last to respond, and the thought of Sonny, in a theatre, surrounded by 15 year old girls, watching this movie, for whatever reason, was an image that nearly made my spleen rupture with the hilarity of it all

Agreed on all points... and yeah, if you go on to read the Midnight Sun draft on Meyer's website... even the little things I thought were added stayed close to Meyer's writing. New Moon, from what I remember, was just as faithful. I am surprised as well, in a good way.

Saw it last night and it wasn't bad. Better then the first one. Werewolves looked great! I mean much better then other adaptations I have seen. Interesting that they were a family and not bitten to get there power.

The Vampire Vulcare group in Italy was cool too. Though I am not quite sure what happened at the counsel it did seem dramatic lol. Great fight scene with the werewolves taking out that Jamaican vampire. So I take it in number 3 we get to see Victoria in it.
