I haven't been all that interested in the PSP since it has no good games outside of a few (MGS: Portable Ops, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth) and what made matters worse, the black gloss was a fingerprint magnet. But the newer one will be 19% thinner and 33% lighter (to put it in perspective, the DS Lite feels like a feather compared to the original DS and it was only 20% lighter). Also the silver PSP looks pretty sleek and at $200 it is a pretty good deal when it includes Daxter, a 1GB MS Pro Duo, and Family Guy UMD.

I've been interested in getting a PSP for quite some time. Now that it's been redesigned and has a nice price tag for it, I'm fer shur going to get one. That package isn't available yet is it?

It includes Daxter? Cool. That and Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters are two reasons I'd like to get one.

Nope. I wanna avoid this thing. Firmware V4.0.
Anti Homebrew.
New Motherboard most likely.
I'll pass.
I'll keep my old ugly black PSP for homebrew and such.

Yeah, I went for months without playing my PSP, but custom firmware ignited my interest since I could play my own PSX games on it. I've also been playing Tales of the World and am getting Brave Story this week. The redesign is awesome, but I think I'll stick with my custom firmware system until we see what happens with the new one.

Is it possible to downgrade from Firmware V4.0 at this point?

I've been interested in getting a PSP for quite some time now. I've actually went out and bought Appleseed ($5 UMD) and Valkyrie Profile.

The only reason I'm thinking about holding off for the newer version, is because I've heard it has faster load times and a possible boost in battery life. I probably wouldn't use it for emulation.

Why does Sony continue to shoot themselves in the foot with all these anti-hombrew crap.

4.0 doesn't exist yet. It's likely going to be there with the redesign, so we'll know then.

They just found a way to downgrade from anything above 3.03 and it takes a lot of effort. Also they released a TA-082 motherboard which will brick a psp during some downgrades. 4.0 is supposed to have some serious changes that are an effort to stop homebrew.

Because they want to screw you over, by having you buy the game at their online store. ;)

Yes, both games they have available. Seriously, if Sony was on the ball with this like Nintendo's VC, it could have been a big hit. Now it's just a joke as are their efforts to stop custom firmware.

Sony will never stop the world's users. No matter how hard they try, hackers will find a way around.

Calling something unhackable is just a challenge. Sony just needs to learn to keep their yaps shut, eventually hackers will get bored..... *prays for Wii Homebrew Community*

I'm incredibly torn...on one hand, the redesign looks incredibly slick, and I have been interested in a PSP for a while now. But, on the other hand, Homebrew was something I was really stoked about if I did get a PSP. If it weren't for them getting rid of any Homebrew, I'd be all over this...now, though, it's hard to say if I'll bother with one or not.

And I'm sorry, but I just ****ing hate UMD. Worst. Format. Ever. Sure you can watch movies on your PSP...but you have to re-buy them! Come on, now!

A free 1GB memory stick is also awesome, I'm glad they're finally packing something decently sized into the box...but I still can't help but feel after you use up your 1GB stick, the price for replacements is just too damn high.

As DS Lite, on the other hand...they still look damn appealing to me! Cheaper than a PSP, too! At the end of the day, I really, REALLY want to like PSP, and I know if they could just address some key issues I'd buy one and love it, but until they figure out something better than UMD, or DRASTICALLY, DRASTICALLY lower the price of their UMD discs, and until they allow Homebrew again (I understand why they would be more than hesitant, but it's just important to me) I really can't validate purchasing one. Sony's only a few steps away from being a valid player in the handheld market. I would listen to music and watch movies on my PSP if it were just a little easer/cheaper to do!

Also, a couple question; Is it going to be available in black like the current PSP? I for one loved the black color scheme! Did they improve the battery life? I really hope they did! The DS just puts this bitch to shame as it stands now battery-wise!

David, it comes out October.

Iridium, it will be available in black come this October for $170. It is the same glossy black as the original, but the original had a matte surface on the back and the new PSP will be glossy front and back. The Star Wars one comes out in November for $200. The battery is actually thinner in size and has less capacity than the original PSP battery but due to the way the new PSP works, the battery life will remain the same. You can use the original PSP battery on the new PSP and since it is higher capacity, you can get even longer play time. The only negative is that since it is bigger, there will be a slight bulge on the back (Sony is releasing a special battery cover plate).

Its worth the wait though. Just don't upgrade every time a new one is released.

It looks much better imo, but I'll be sticking to my DS. I do envy the fact that this can go online and you can watch movies on it, but the selection of games for the PSP is such crap.

tme to update the thread title - now you can download this: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/pandoras...of-psp-hacking/

...which will allow you to downgrade ANY psp to the hackable versions. Plus it fixes bricked psp's... they even go as far as saying this will work for any future versions too.

So, after finding out that I had no way of hacking an iPhone to use it in Canada (which I was JUST about to buy one) I decided to pull a sort of impulse decision and bought the Star Wars Edition PSP bundle, as well as a separate copy of Final Fantasy (the redone one for the PSP), as well as a pile of trade paperbacks.

This may not prove to be a very smart decision, but I'm looking forward to seeing what I can get out of the device and getting hardcore into the homebrew scene for the device.

...Hopefully I don't grow to regret this purchase
