When JK gave the following quote, "There is a character who does manage, in desperate circumstances, to do magic quite late in life, but that is very rare...", many people thought she was speaking of Petunia Dursley, but this was later debunked. So I think that this quote is meant to be Argus Filch! Think about it......he's pretty old......signifying the "quite late in life", and possibly he get's in a desperate circumstance and needs to perform magic. This is just a theory, but I just wanted to put it forward and get a little discussion on it.

I like it. Good theory. I would have thought Hagrid but he has done magic since the first book so that's out.

Haha, I like the suggestions. I don't really know about the desperate circumstances, but if I could guess, I've always seen how partial Filch was to the school. He sure seems to use that Secrecy Sensor a lot. I believe Filch has a good side, and with DD and Snape being currently....well......to not spur anything else, indisposed, I think he will have to protect the school from something. Or at least help protect it, Hogwarts protected by only Filch is....a discomforting thought. I think Filch will be the turn-around character of the book. JK usually doesn't put too many people there that are there for the entirety of the books just for them to be there. I've always felt bad for him, I mean at least that creepy cat lady Squib....um......whats-her-name has at least had something important to do. Filch has really had nothing to do important.....other than scare the trio many a time.
